Happy Spring Semester!

I hope that all of you have enjoyed the winter break and are staying warm! Just wanted to remind you all that the KMEA ISW is quickly approaching and we do not have much time to prepare!

Here are somethings that YOU can do to prepare for the KMEA ISW.

  1. Register to attend the KMEA ISW. The collegiate registration deadline is February 1 for the collegiate rate. If you miss this deadline, you may still attend, however, you will have to pay the full price, and not the collegiate rate, so be sure to register by the deadline. The ISW this year is February 22-24. Please be sure when making your schedules for the semester that you put these dates down. The clinic schedule for the ISW will be available very soon, so be on the lookout for another email.
  2. If you are someone that is interested in a state collegiate officer position, you can find the application form on the KMEA Collegiate webpage under the forms and documents tab! Being an state officer is a very rewarding experience that provides a plethora of opportunities that will help prepare you to become a better music educator. If interested, be sure to look at the application soon so you can prepare the required materials before the deadline. The positions available include State President and Vice President. Application materials are due to collegiate@ksmea.org AND collegiateadvisor@ksmea.org by February 1.
  3. KMEA offers two different scholarships for collegiate members. Scholarship information can be located under the awards tab in the student scholarships section. All application materials are due by February 1.

Basically, all things related to collegiate can be found on the webpage, and everything is due February 1.

Another topic that needs to be addressed is Hill Day. Hill day is an advocacy event in which collegiate members, along with the KMEA executive board, and some other special guests, travel to the State Capitol Building in Topeka. There we will be talking to legislators and their staff, serving them breakfast, and advocating on the behalf of music education in the state capitol. This opportunity would be great for any person who is interested in telling your music education story to the lawmakers of Kansas, telling them about what music means to you, and why it is important. This event will especially be beneficial for any collegiate member who is interested in a state officer position, as this will be something that you will participate in as a state officer. If you are interested in participating, please have your chapter president contact me at collegiate@ksmea.org with your name. This year, Hill Day will be on February 21. (yes, this is the day before the ISW I am aware).

This opportunity is one that the music educators of Kansas are very privileged to have, and as collegiates, I would like to have a presence on the hill, as we are the future music educators of the state.
